Pays de Douarnenez

English

DOUARNENEZ BAY

Brittany's western coast is known as Finistère, meaning ‘the edge of the world'

The region of Douarnenez, nestling in its own bay, is famous for being a land of 1001 colours. It is like one giant garden surrounded by the sea: a land of hydrangeas, cammelias and rhodeodendrons. Within its ever-changing countryside you sense a heritage that is both rural and coastal; you'll find traces of local agriculture in the wheat and corn that appear next to natural wooded copses, moorland, heathers and broom. The rivers flow alongside coastal creeks and beaches of fine white sand. Rocky shores, fishermen's cottages, ancient wash-houses, quaint chapels and stone monuments show off the local granite to best advantage.

Whether the sky is grey or blue, the magic of this region always manages to seduce you.

Here, we have a mild and temperate ocean climate governed by the Gulf Stream. Whatever the season, you can always find a sheltered place to walk, whether you're seeking shade from the sun, the breeze or the sea-spray that sometimes catches you unawares!

In summer, make the most of the sunlight by catching one of our incredible ocean sunsets - don't forget that here the sun sets later than anywhere else in Europe!

What we call Douarnenez Bay includes Douarnenez town itself plus the neighbouring parishes of:
